Another from the 2012 edition of Log Your Memory...
We changed it up this time by taking trains for the entire vacation… no cars, no planes. Knowing that traffic is terrible between here and New York City, we dreaded driving. The mandatory bathroom and meal breaks plus slow-moving highways, tolls, parking, and gas expenses forced us to think outside the box. Amtrak gave the kids more leg room, the ability to walk around, and a cafĂ© car. Our total round-trip Amtrak expenses for the trip were just over $400… for all of us (and my mom) together… only slightly more than if we drove.
With the exception of the boat to the Statue of Liberty, it was all trains- light-rail, subway, or commuter train. Though it might have been easier at certain points to take a cab, we stayed on the train-plan, and it worked beautifully. The kids were pros at standing on the subways before we left and even knew which trains to look for when we needed to transfer. If only we could ditch our car at home and take a train everywhere!

- I am Heather, a stay-at-home mom of 3 kids, ages 9 1/2, 7, and 3. I have been scrapbooking for about 9 years but I'm happy to say that my style has evolved quite a bit since the beginning. Most of my layouts are about the kids or our family, but I also treasure my scrapped recipes... it makes cooking WAY more fun! You can follow my blog by clicking "Follow" in the top left corner.
